20 Years on Planet Earth

I had my 20th birthday two weeks ago. Goodbye teenage years. I don’t think I’ll miss you much.

I haven’t written anything in a while, so I thought I’d make a list (because I love an excuse to write a list): 20 things I’ve learnt in 20 years on Planet Earth.

  1. Oreos and milk are about as close to heaven as you can get with two feet still on the ground.
  2. When you reach 20, people decide that you should know how to adult by now. (Personally, I don’t think anyone really knows how to adult – you just get better at acting over the years).
  3. You’re a unique, peculiar oddball, just like everyone else. And there’s absolutely no point wasting energy on being boring.
  4. Sleep matters. 3 hours of sleep isn’t enough and 12 hours of sleep is too much.
  5. Sometimes there are people who don’t make your life happy. It’s okay to let them go (even if you’re related).
  6. Being selfish is okay too. Taking care of yourself before you start mending other people is 100% necessary.
  7. Family is precious.
  8. Death isn’t all that scary, but grief hurts like hell and makes you want to throw things.
  9. The key to happiness is honesty: being honest to yourself, above all.
  10. Life is too short to be unhappy and change nothing. If you’re unhappy, something is wrong and you need to walk a different path.
  11. The best holidays aren’t always the expensive ones to foreign sunshine cities, but are the little trips we take with the people we love most in the world.
  12. Home isn’t one place. Home is wherever you can let yourself in, put your feet up on the sofa, make yourself a cup of tea and relax.
  13. Tea is a beautiful gift to humankind. A big, warm hug in a mug.
  14. Earth isn’t mine to take for granted.
  15. Standing up for what you believe in is just as important as defending the voices of others, even if you don’t agree. (Unless they’re intolerant scumbags who preach hate and disunity.)
  16. Plans are made for going off-track. You could map out the rest of your life and it wouldn’t matter, one tiny thing could send it in the opposite direction
  17. Looking in the mirror and being skinny isn’t the same as looking in the mirror and being happy. There’s no correlation with self-love and dress size.
  18. Smile. It makes you and everyone else happy.
  19. People are telling the truth when they say things will get better.
  20. Be open to change. Sometimes people walk into your life by accident when you weren’t supposed to be on shift at the pub and now you wouldn’t ever look back to a life without them…
